Anish Kapoor gets some flack for being a complete hack with the whole ‘the art is you watching yourself.’ But to your point about reflection, I recall he did have a string of installations of aluminum and lacquer that I think nailed what Rothko chapel was also accomplishing. Check out “Corona.”
Thank you for reminding me of these works! I looked up the "Corona" series and I do recall reading about them in a contemporary art history class years back (I didn't understand them much and wasn't really interested then). I've never seen Anish Kappor's works in person, but I'd really like to. I can understand the criticism and people's objection's with Kapoor being one of the richest artists ever, but I'd love to see his installations in person. There was a whirlpool installation that he created that looked beautiful in images, I'm not sure if it's on permanent display anywhere but I'd love to see it.
You really ought to see the installation that's in Palm Springs, which is conveniently enough not too far from LA. So luckily not like you need to go out to Marfa or something crazy haha
I looked up the justice (or lack thereof!) Google images does to it, and it really doesn't give the sheer size -- the falling down a well sort of energy.
Thank you for the suggestion Max! That's perfect, I'll have to stop by next time I'm back in Cali. I have family that is out near La Quinta so that would be a great stop to visit.
